The Los Angeles Dodgers appear to have turned the corner from the lull they were in at the start of May, and it would seem that LA is step closer to getting healthy. While injuries have thinned out the Dodgers' pitching depth over the last few weeks, second baseman Tommy Edman was the notable injury they had at the start of the season.

Edman had offseason ankle injury that resulted in the Dodgers having a revolving door at second base through the first two months of the regular season. Hyeseong Kim, Santiago Espinal, Alex Freeland, and Miguel Rojas have each had turns. It's been a reminder that while each of those players have value to the Dodgers, it's not because they should be everyday players.

It appears that Edman has taken a step forward in his recovery. Dave Roberts revealed that Edman has been running at full strength in recent weeks. That often is the last box that needs to be checked before a position player begins a minor-league rehab assignment.

Roberts confirmed that Edman will head to the Dodgers' spring training complex in Arizona next week with the expectation of having live batting practice. From there, the 31-year-old veteran should start a rehab assignment shortly after.

Edman was participating in some baseball activity by the end of spring training, but not to the extent that he was under consideration for the Opening Day. At the time, the expectation was that Edman would be ready for game action by the end of May.

Tommy Edman's return should end one roster nightmare

The biggest takeaway from the Dodgers' 2026 season thus far has been the struggles of the offense. Shohei Ohtani, Kyle Tucker, and Freddie Freeman haven't quite produced at the superstar level one comes to expect from them. Not to mention, Los Angeles was without Mookie Betts for several weeks.

The Dodgers will certainly need those four to return to form, but the return of Edman should stabilize the second base position. Not to mention, it allows Kim to serve in a utility role that rounds out the bench for Roberts.

Edman's return should also bring an end to the experiment with Espinal's time in Dodger blue. His versatility has been appreciated, but there's no hiding the reality that he's carrying a wRC+ of 54 through 39 plate appearances.

Espinal recently restructured his contract with the Dodgers, pushing back the deadline for when he could be released without the team having to pay him the remainder of his salary. Espinal managed to hold onto his spot with the return of Betts, but the same likely won't be the case once Edman is back.
