Freddie Freeman and the Los Angeles Dodgers were licking their chops when the news landed that their chief rival, the San Diego Padres, had traded for Nestor Cortes at the deadline. In the NL West showdown between these two heavyweights on Saturday, Freeman was hoping to repeat history with the Dodgers badly needing to take care of business and put some breathing room between themselves and San Diego.
Freeman must have been feeling some serious Deja vu when he stepped in the box to lead off the second inning against Cortes. Just like in Game 1 of the World Series, the lefty hurler grooved a pitch middle-in to the dangerous Freeman, who... just missed it.

The ball left Freeman's bat at 107.5 miles per hour and traveled 399 feet before falling into Ramon Laureano's glove. Yankee fans everywhere were left in shambles, thinking about what could have been.
Despite an all too familiar scare from Freddie Freeman, Nestor Cortes handled the Dodgers with ease
The Dodgers have fond memories of their adventures against Cortes, but Saturday's game won't go down as one of them. The crafty lefty carved up LA's lineup, going six shutout innings and allowing just one hit.
It wasn't what you wanted to see as a Dodgers fan. The team needed to take care of business against San Diego, and save for Sunday's bludgeoning of the vaunted Padres bullpen, they did not. The bats were silent in both Friday and Saturday's affairs, scratching just one run across in each game, and that malaise resulted in the team coming out of the series dropping two out of three and ending up deadlocked with San Diego atop the division.
The Dodgers will have to hope that their big home run barrage on Sunday will give them the mental edge over the Padres the rest of the way down the stretch.
Though that remains to be seen, the Dodgers and their fans can take solace in one thing. Freeman taking Cortes for yet another ride, but this time coming up short, is just another hilarious jab at the Yankees and their fan base, who surely aren't laughing very much these days.
