To no one's surprise, the Dodgers used their two September roster spots on Hyeseong Kim and Michael Kopech, who were both returning from rehab assignments. Kopech was technically ready to go a few days before he was actually reactivated, but the Dodgers prioritized Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates in the last days of August.
Kim rejoined the Dodgers officially on Sept. 2 for the opener of their series against the Pirates, but he became the latest player to get caught up in an air travel-related hiccup.
In July, the Red Sox now infamously suffered what sounds like a horrifically turbulent flight from Boston to Minneapolis that left players reeling from motion sickness; Kim didn't have it quite so bad, but Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register reportedthat he only arrived in Pittsburgh after a missed connection and delayed flights stranded him and his interpreter at the airport for 14-15 hours.
Maybe that was why the Dodgers didn't put him in the lineup on Tuesday; he pinch-ran for Miguel Rojas in the ninth and scored a run on a Shohei Ohtani double.
Dodgers Injury Updates: Hyeseong Kim stranded at airport, Tommy Edman and Max Muncy rehab assignments
Tommy Edman and Max Muncy are the last two Dodgers position players on the IL, Edman Aug. 4 with a sprained ankle and Muncy since Aug. 15 with an oblique strain. It's both players' second time on the IL this season. The Dodgers' offense is in okay shape as of late, but they could really use Edman back in the outfield to give them some more flexibility at the corners (read: bench Michael Conforto more often).
Edman began his rehab assignment in Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday, and Muncy is expected to join him soon. They could be back by the Dodgers' three-game set against the Rockies in LA starting on Sept. 8.
Both were hot before they went onto the IL; Muncy had been hitting an absurd .400 with a 1.571 OPS in his last seven games before he went down. The Dodgers have made do with a combination of Buddy Kennedy (now out of the organization), Alex Freeland (slumping), and more recently Kiké Hernández since then, but they need Muncy's power back in the lineup.
All considered, everything's going mostly to plan for the Dodgers. They're getting all of their players back at the right time, but the ones who are healthy are going to need to step up their game in the meantime.
