The Los Angeles Dodgers' 6-5 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday secured one of the all-time most inexplicable season sweeps for the Angels. As unfathomable as it would have seemed at the start of the season, the Dodgers lost all six games they've played against the Angels this season. This adds another layer to the painful irony that was Dave Roberts downplaying Shohei Ohtani starting against his former team earlier this week.

While Roberts was quick to downplay the Dodgers' games against the Angels,Ohtani clearly thought the games were important. He made that extremely clear with his play on the field.

Shohei Ohtani deserved better than Dodgers’ flop vs Angels

We're not saying Ohtani regrets his decision; after all, he was the National League MVP and the Dodgers won the World Series last season. Still, dropping all six games to the Angels this season just speaks to how weird the season has felt for the Dodgers.

Despite having a roster that is unmatched across Major League Baseball, injuries have thwarted any consistent momentum the Dodgers have had this season. Getting swept by the Angels only adds to what has been a weird week for Ohtani, who has also been named in a real estate lawsuit.

After the Angels took all three games against the Dodgers to open the week, the defending World Series champions have dropped four consecutive games, including six of their last 10 contests.

Making things even worse for the Dodgers is the fact that the San Diego Padres have been on a heater since the MLB trade deadline. Of course, the Padres were the most aggressive team at the deadline, adding Mason Miller, Ryan O'Hearn, and Ramón Laureano as part of their deadline haul. The Padres are in the middle of a five-game winning streak and winners of eight of their last 10 games. The hot streak from the Padres suddenly has the Dodgers looking up in the National League, trailing San Diego by one game.

The stage is set for this weekend when the Dodgers will be hosting the Padres for a three-game set at Dodger Stadium. Ohtani will be ready. Will his teammates?
