As the revolving door in the Dodgers' bullpen continues to spin, Los Angeles has added yet another new (old face) to its roster.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed after Monday's extra-innings win over the San Diego Padres that the club was planning to recall right-hander Matt Sauer from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Sauer is expected to start Tuesday's game for Los Angeles in an opener role.
While Sauer was already with the team in San Diego as a member of the taxi squad, the Dodgers need to formally add him to their roster before he can pitch in a game for them. As a result, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reported Tuesday morning that veteran right-hander José Ureña would be designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for Sauer.
Dodgers make another roster move and DFA veteran José Ureña to bring back Matt Sauer
It's only June, but this marks the fourth call-up of the season for Sauer, who signed a minor league contract with the Dodgers in January. He has pitched 20 2/3 innings across seven appearances for the Dodgers, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits for a 3.05 ERA at the Major League level this season.
Sauer, like many of the 28 pitchers the Dodgers have used already this season, is not expected to stick around for long. Players can only be optioned a maximum of five times in a single season, however, so the next time the Dodgers option Sauer back to Triple-A will be his last.
Ureña had just signed with the Dodgers last week, shortly after being designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays. During his brief stint in Los Angeles, the 33-year-old made a pair of appearances and gave up one run on four hits over three innings.
Ureña has already pitched for three different teams this season – the Dodgers, the New York Mets and the Toronto Blue Jays – and he could soon be pitching for a fourth. He has versatility as a swingman and will almost certainly land with a new organization in short order – unless, of course, the Dodgers give him the Chris Stratton treatment and get into a cycle of repeatedly DFAing him only to immediately re-sign him.
