Winning two out of the last three World Series will put a target on your back. The Los Angeles Dodgers are used to opposing teams' fans and media coming at them, but usually it's after they've done something. This offseason, they haven't done anything yet.
That hasn't stopped the hot takes from coming in, particularly from the blowhards in the New York media. The New York Mets are particularly obsessed with the Dodgers, and after missing the playoffs last season they have a lot of work to do to get on LA's level despite throwing a lot of cash around.
Tommy Lugauer over at Big Apple sports talk radio station WFAN had a particularly spicy take on how the Mets can take down the Dodgers. Too bad it's never going to happen.
Mets radio host comes up with completely unrealistic hot take that must have the Dodgers rolling with laughter
The man known as "Loogy" is pleading for the Mets to "fight fire with fire" and go out and trade for Tarik Skubal while also signing Cody Bellinger this offseason.

Okay, sir. Skubal very likely isn't going to be traded, but if he is, the Dodgers could very well best whatever package the Mets can offer. As for Bellinger, by all means, go for it. That would eliminate one more suitor from the Kyle Tucker sweepstakes and make it easier for Andrew Friedman and company to convince the superstar outfielder, and superior player to Bellinger, to don Dodger Blue.
The Mets have already made a big splash this winter, trading off their incumbent left fielder, Brandon Nimmo, in exchange for 35-year-old second baseman Marcus Semien. Nimmo just came off a season where he clubbed a career-high 25 dingers, while Semien posted a career-worst .669 OPS and produced the same fWAR (2.1) as the second baseman they already have on their roster, Jeff McNeil. To make matters worse, Semien will make over $10 million more than McNeil in 2026.
It kind of seems like they just opened a hole for the sake of saying they did something. Pursuing Skubal would be much of the same. The Mets' rotation is in desperate need of an ace after their brilliant idea to miscast Sean Manaea in that role led to an injury-shortened, 5.67 ERA campaign. Alongside him, Kodai Senga is on the trade block after failing to prove that he can stay healthy and productive for an extended period of time. And their other big rotation addition from last season, Frankie Montas, was so bad that they DFA'd him and will be paying him $17 million in 2026 to not pitch for them.
Meanwhile, their best hope at filling out their rotation lies on the young arms of Nolan McLean, Jonah Tong, and Brandon Sproat, at least two of whom would have to go to Detroit in a Skubal package. So, yes, even if the Mets were able to land Skubal, they'd be left with not much around him in the rotation.
The Dodgers, meanwhile, would consider adding Skubal a luxury. That, Loogy, is the true difference between the two clubs' firepower. The Mets need a big move like that, while for the Dodgers ... landing the back-to-back AL Cy Young winner would just be adding to their collection of playthings.
Lastly, Lugauer isn't acknowledging the reality of the situation. He's advocating these moves to catch up to where the Dodgers were in 2025, not considering the fact that the Dodgers will make improvements, too. In reality, he's trying to catch a moving target.
So go ahead, trade for Skubal and sign Bellinger. You'll just clear the pathway for LA to sign Tucker and steal away Edwin Diaz, solving the one true hole on the roster. See? The delusion truly is hysterical.
