The Los Angeles Dodgers organization and its players have been stepping up in the effort to help Los Angeles overcome and then recover from the wildfires that have been devastating the city for the last week and a half.
Freddie and Chelsea Freeman donated $300,000 across three organizations, Chris and Mary Taylor are matching contributions up to $5,000 to the Los Angeles Fire Department through the CT3 Foundation, and the Dodgers were one of 12 organizations to pitch in to an $8 million fund benefitting the American Red Cross, LAFD, and more.
Dodger Stadium was also home to a supply drive on Friday, with multiple Dodgers including Taylor, Blake Snell, and Anthony Banda in attendance to hand out hygiene kits, school supplies, and sneakers to displaced LA residents.
Shohei Ohtani is joining in on the relief efforts. On Thursday, he wrote on Instagram that he would be donating $500,000 to various groups and directed fans toward the Dodgers' (along with other LA-based teams) collaboration with Fanatics, the proceeds of which will go to the American Red Cross and the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation.
Dodgers News: Shohei Ohtani wildfire relief donation, Tanner Scott and Jack Flaherty free agency updates
In free agency news, two potential Dodgers targets are still floating around on the market. The Dodgers seemed to pick up some steam with Tanner Scott back in December, but rumors have cooled significantly. Scott took a meeting with the Mets, but New York's signing of AJ Minter on Friday settles their need for a high-leverage reliever, which probably means they're out on Scott. This could re-open the door for LA, if it's ever been fully closed.
Scott is also looking for an incredibly lucrative deal, one that could make him the second-highest reliever in baseball behind Edwin Díaz.
Jack Flaherty, who reportedly adjusted his asking price to reflect fewer years and a higher AAV, looked like he could've been a consideration for LA if they'd lost out on Roki Sasaki, but his future with the Dodgers now appears to be dead in the water. Fans even speculated that he might've been holding out for a Sasaki-to-the-Blue-Jays notification on Friday, when he posted two GIFs to Twitter implying that he was waiting on something.
If that had anything to do with Sasaki and the Dodgers, Flaherty's got his answer. The rotation is full — too full, even — and even with Dodgers pitchers' penchant for getting hurt, there's absolutely zero space on that roster for another starter now.
Dodgers trade prospect Dylan Campbell after Roki Sasaki deal
Los Angeles did make one additional move on Friday night, sending outfielder Dylan Campbell, the slugger from Texas, to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for additional international bonus pool money.
Clearly, LA has pursuits affected by the pool -- either Sasaki's final tally, or other prospects they'd like to retain.
Campbell hit .251 with 10 homers in 115 games with Great Lakes of the Midwest League last season.
