As injuries continue to pile up, the revolving door continues to turn in the Los Angeles Dodgers' bullpen. After losing an alarming 15th pitcher to injury this season in Luis García, the Dodgers signed veteran right-hander Jose Ureña, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Ureña, who was designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday, rejected his outright assignment to Triple-A and instead elected free agency. Ureña will join the Dodgers' bullpen just in time to face the New York Mets, who designated him for assignment at the end of April.
The Dodgers will mark Ureña's third MLB club this season, as he opened the year on a minor-league contract with the Mets. New York selected his contract on April 27 and designated him for assignment two days later after he allowed five earned runs in three innings in his lone MLB appearance with the club.
Ureña has spent parts of 11 seasons in the Major Leagues, the majority of which came with the Miami Marlins from 2015-20. He was a starting pitcher early in his career, posting a 3.90 ERA in 343 2/3 innings for the Marlins from 2017-18, but continued struggles with his command saw him relegated to a swingman role.
Ureña began to bounce around the league after he left the Marlins, suiting up for five different clubs from 2019-23. During that span, he pitched to a rather forgettable 5.50 ERA over 350 1/3 innings.
Dodgers sign ex-Mets reliever Jose Ureña for potential revenge grudge match Tuesday
Ureña will join a Dodgers bullpen that has been ravaged by injuries to the likes of García, Evan Phillips, Kirby Yates and Blake Treinen, among others. He's part of a fresh wave of arms the Dodgers have brought in to keep their sputtering relief corps afloat, including Lou Trivino, Ryan Loutos, Will Klein, Chris Stratton and Alexis Diaz.
The Dodgers will need to open a 40-man roster spot for Ureña, as they are currently at capacity, and any of the aforementioned depth additions could be at risk as the roster shuffling continues.
