Embarrassing Yankees fan crosses several lines with dangerous Mookie Betts interference

Yankees fans must know that they're widely recognized as the worst fanbase in baseball, but at this point, that seems like a mantle that many of them are willing to wear with pride. It's flat-out embarrassing for them and their team, but they keep doing the worst possible things at the worst possible times, so that designation just goes beyond any jealousy other fans might feel toward the Yankees' 27 titles.

Dodgers fans didn't exactly make themselves or the team look good either during the NLDS against the Padres, when some threw balls and trash on the field, but Yankees fans in right field during Game 4 of the World Series just took things to another, completely unacceptable level.

In the bottom of the first, Yankees leadoff man Gleyber Torres flew out into foul territory. Mookie Betts gave chase and made a nice catch at the wall to snag it for the out.

That should've been the end of that, but then a fan who should probably face a lifetime ban from Yankee Stadium caught Betts' wrist as he was coming down and pried open his glove. The ball spun away as the fan tried to get ahold of it, and Torres was rightfully called out on Betts' initial catch.

Yankees fans sink to a new low with gross instance of fan interference on Dodgers' Mookie Betts

Joe Davis was in good humor about it as the Fox broadcast showed replays, but John Smoltz said glumly, "Well, he won't be watching the game much longer."

Beyond the fact that prices for tickets to this series were in the thousands of dollars, which that fan (and the guy next to him, who grabbed Betts' non-glove hand) just completely threw away, fans should never be touching players like this. Throwing things onto the field at players is dangerous. Grabbing at them like this is dangerous.

If we were feeling more charitable, we could say that the fan just got caught up in the moment. But we're not feeling charitable, so there's just no room for excuses here. It was another embarrassing moment for a fanbase that seems all too eager to embarrass themselves, but at least the right call was made here and no damage was incurred because of some ridiculous antics by the home crowd.
