Michael Siani has become somewhat of a journeyman over the past year. Dating back to last November, he's been involved in ten different transactions, including multiple stops with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Beyond the Dodgers, Siani has had "stops" with the Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, and Baltimore Orioles. Despite the 26-year-old racking up frequent-flyer miles, he's only played in one game at the big-league level this season. Ironically, it was with the Orioles against the Dodgers over the weekend.

Siani's run with the Orioles was short-lived, considering he was designated for assignment earlier this week to make room on Baltimore's roster for Chadwick Tromp. Considering his name has been littered throughout the transaction log dating back the offseason, chances are he will get claimed once again.

A former fourth-round pick of the Cincinnati Reds, Siani hasn't quite latched on with any organization he's been with. He spent nearly three years with the St. Louis Cardinals, including 334 plate appearances on 2024, but that's been the only time his stay on a major league roster has extended beyond 19 games.

In 384 career plate appearances, Siani boasts a slash line of .220/.276/.270 with a wRC+ of 57. He's widely been viewed as an above-average fielder in the outfield, likely the reason many teams have taken a flier on him in recent months.

Michael Siani DFA gives Dodgers the chance to do the funniest thing

Clearly, the Dodgers see something they like in Siani. They made multiple claims on the outfielder during the offseason, but he was the go-to roster casualty when they needed space on the 40-man roster. He has one minor-league option remaining, so he can be claimed and stashed in Triple-A if that's what the Dodgers are hoping.

As silly as it may seem to suggest the Dodgers doing so, there could be some hidden value to the idea. In the coming month, it stands to reason that the Dodgers will trade from their outfield depth to address their pursuits at the deadline. LA is rich in outfield prospects, and Ryan Ward, with the big-league club and on the 40-man roster, looks like a clear trade candidate.

If nothing else, adding Siani could be the Dodgers preparing for future moves. Now, there likely isn't a scenario where Siani is playing games of consequence for the Dodgers this season, but the organization never turns down depth when they have the chance to add it.
