With the Dodgers already off to a 1-0 lead in the 2017 NLCS against the Cubs, Chicago starter Jon Lester had given up four walks, but just two hits to LA's batters through 4 2/3 innings. Addison Russell had put the Cubs up by one in the top of the fifth with a solo homer, but Lester started to shake in the bottom of the inning, when Charlie Culberson got to second on a leadoff double.
Lester got the next two batters to pop out and then ground out, but then Justin Turner, who'd also driven in a run the night before, singled to bring Culberson home and tie the game. As things turned out, Turner would be doing all of the heavy lifting for LA that night.
The game was still at 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth. When Turner came back to the plate, there were two men on and two outs. He could've poked a single into the outfield and it would've been enough to walk things off, but instead he hammered a terrible fastball from Cubs starter-turned-temporary-reliever John Lackey 416 feet into center field for a walk-off, three-run homer.
X user Roland Au recalled the moment on Christmas Eve as he celebrated his engagement, and credited it as the thing that brought him and his fiancée together.
Dodgers fan shares touching memory of Justin Turner's 2017 NLCS Game 2 walk-off after engagement
Au recalled that he was in his dorm watching the game, and celebrated so loudly that his downstairs neighbor, now his fiancée, came upstairs to check on him. Turner, always a great social media presence, replied with his congratulations.
The Dodgers went on to win the series 4-1, ending the Cubs' attempt at back-to-back World Series wins. That walk-off homer wasn't the last of Turner's heroics that October; he hit one more blast against the Cubs in Game 4, and one against the Astros in Game 1 of the World Series. Although the Dodgers infamously lost out on a ring in seven games against Houston, Turner's NLCS homer is one of the most memorable moments from that year's postseason run.
Au's engagement is a feel-good moment on top of a feel-good moment, made even better by the fact that Turner happened to catch wind of it.
