On Sunday, longtime Dodgers trade target Nolan Arenado dropped a not-so-subtle hint on Instagram about where he was inclined to end up in a potential trade. As the Cardinals are looking to cut payroll this offseason and reports have surfaced saying they've been entertaining potential offers for Arenado, he attached the Kendrick Lamar song "dodger blue" to a recent post.
That could've been a coincidental one-off, sure. Arenado's a SoCal guy who grew up rooting for the Dodgers. Maybe he just liked the song. But the timing of it, which coincides with all of the rumors about a trade and the Dodgers' history of interest in his market, definitely made it seem like a sign.
Arenado has posted again since then, with a series of videos of him taking drills at third base. Never one to not stir the pot, Kiké Hernández popped up in the comments below to ask incredulously, "NO SONG FOR THE POST?!!"
Even if Arenado's intentions when he posted that song initially were completely without ulterior motive, he must've known exactly the kind of response it got from fans. Although he declined to add another Dodger-related song to his newest post, he did repost a video a fan tagged him in.
The video itself is standard enough, a fan approaching Arenado in the wild and most of the caption thanking him for being accommodating. However, it left off with another conspicuous Dodgers mention, reading, "Future Dodger!?!?"
Nolan Arenado keeps dropping hints that a Dodgers trade is in the works
It's likely that a lot of fans meet players out in the world and post about it on their Instagram stories, but it's not everyday that the players then repost the videos on their own stories, and especially not ones that explicitly mention a team that isn't the one the player is currently on. Either Arenado has seen the fan response and is having a little bit of fun with it, or something is brewing.
The Dodgers have wanted Arenado for years, and the window might finally be open for them to get him if the interest is still there. Although he hasn't been the same player he used to be over the last two seasons, it would probably still take a major-league-ready player and a couple of lower-ranked top 30 prospects to get him over to LA.
With the Winter Meetings right around the corner, Arenado and the Dodgers will definitely be ones to watch, if only to see whether or not these hints have been total red herrings.
