When the Los Angeles Dodgers traded second baseman Gavin Lux to the Cincinnati Reds, a reunion with fan favorite Kiké Hernández seemed plausible — even with the signing of second baseman Hye-seong Kim.

However, the Dodgers might have some competition if they intend to re-sign the two-time World Series champion utility man. Hernández was recently linked to the Philadelphia Phillies by Eno Sarris of The Athletic (subscription required), who suggested that the reigning National League East champions could benefit from signing him to improve their outfield defense.

The Phillies have three solid offensive corner outfielders in Max Kepler, Brandon Marsh and Nick Castellanos. Their outfield defense, however, is another story, leaving room on their bench for a capable defender who can play at multiple positions on the diamond. As of now, that spot would likely go to Weston Wilson, who filled the utility role in Philadelphia last season.

"But would a player like Kiké Hernández make more sense?" Sarris wrote. "He’s more of a sure thing offensively and rated as a positive defensively at all of his positions. He could come into games late to spell Castellanos and keep the outfield defense above water, and he’d generally be available at any position should the need arise. The only problem would be that any dollar they spend on Hernández will cost them double due to their luxury tax situation. Might be worth it, though, to round out that bench."

Hernández struggled at the plate last season, finishing with a slash line of .229/.281/.373. However, his performance improved significantly in the second half, during which he saw his numbers improve to .274/.304/.458. The postseason was where he really shined for the Dodgers in 2024, slashing .294/.357/.451 and collecting 23 total bases, 15 hits and a pair of home runs.

Hernández has made it clear that he would like to return to the Dodgers in 2025, and Dodgers fans would love to have him back. But the market for his services is sizable, and it's clear that he will have options if he doesn't land back in Los Angeles.
