ESPN insider and all-around most trustworthy source for baseball news Jeff Passan went on a tear on Tuesday, when he speculated on contracts for basically all of MLB's biggest free agents from the 2025-2026 offseason class and into the beyond. Basically every notable name, from Kyle Tucker to Tarik Skubal to Junior Caminero to Gunnar Henderson, was included in a pretty exhaustive list.
For a lot of teams, it would be incredibly bad news if their players actually ran their value up this high (Paul Skenes is not getting $400 million from the Pittsburgh Pirates). The Dodgers can look at a list like this and see a veritable buffet of talent to pick and choose from over the next six or seven years.
Roki Sasaki is on Passan's list, in the $200 million range, but the Dodgers have a long time before they have to worry about him hitting free agency and therefore a long time to work out an extension.
The Dodgers' roster is mostly settled for the near future, and the next truly indispensable Dodger to leave will be Freddie Freeman in 2027. Still, with guys years out from arbitration eligibility, let alone free agency, also on the list, there's no reason not to think about the faraway future a little.
Jeff Passan's list of contract predictions for some of MLB's top stars doesn't look daunting at all for the Dodgers
Passan puts Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson, who won't be a free agent until after the 2028 season, in a league of his own in the $600 million range. Kyle Tucker and Elly de la Cruz occupy the $500 million tier, and Tarik Skubal and Skenes are running at $400 million.
Tucker immediately stands out here; unless the Cubs successfully extend him this season, he'll be a free agent when the year is over, and the Dodgers will need an outfielder after Michael Conforto leaves (if they don't move Mookie Betts back to right field). Although No. 1 position player prospect Dalton Rushing, who has some experience in the outfield, could be a consideration, the Dodgers don't seem swayed about a full-time switch, and Tucker has quietly been one of baseball's best bats throughout his career.
Because the Dodgers can never be satisfied when it comes to loading up the rotation, Skubal will be a free agent after 2026, at which point Dustin May, Tony Gonsolin, and Clayton Kershaw are all likely to have already moved on.
We'll reserve speculation on guys like Caminero, James Wood, and Kristian Campbell, who are included in Passan's list but are still years and years out from free agency, but the possibilities really are endless for the Dodgers, who shouldn't be expected to stop spending ridiculous amounts of money anytime soon.
