What does Dodgers infield depth chart look like after Gavin Lux injury?
Gavin Lux has officially been ruled out of the 2023 season with a torn ACL. The Los Angeles Dodgers announced the news on Tuesday morning to the dismay of fans, who were clinging to a shred of hope that the knee injury wasn't going to be a worst-case scenario.
This unfortunately upends the Dodgers' infield plans for 2023 in a massive way. Lux was supposed to start at shortstop with Miguel Rojas taking over an infield utility role, but now Rojas will probably fill Lux's role (at least for the time being). Spring Training will dictate a lot of what's to come.
Fans can probably expect Miguel Vargas to remain at second base with Max Muncy at third, but a couple of other players will more than likely be affected by Lux's absence for the entirety of 2023.
The first is Chris Taylor. The Dodgers have plans to reportedly utilize him more in the outfield, but that could change. Taylor logged 23 games at shortstop in 2021, 20 in the shortened 2020 and 39 in 2019. Entering his age-32 season and having dealt with injuries the last two seasons, this probably isn't the Dodgers' first choice for a backup, but the situation could arise now that the depth chart has thinned.
The other player is Michael Busch, who has yet to be given a true opportunity to prove his worth to the Dodgers. Like Taylor, he's more of a utility option, having played second base, left field and first base in each of the last two seasons. Perhaps he can get some outfield reps in place of Taylor whenever the veteran needs to fill in at shortstop.
What does Dodgers infield depth chart look like after Gavin Lux's injury?
Dodgers' 2023 infield depth chart
1B: Freddie Freeman, Max Muncy, Michael Busch
2B: Miguel Vargas, Chris Taylor, Luke Williams, Michael Busch
SS: Miguel Rojas, Chris Taylor
3B: Max Muncy, Miguel Vargas, Yonny Hernandez, Luke Williams
Forget what the Dodgers' depth chart says on MLB.com because it seems a bit disorganized. It's doubtful Luke Williams will be the backup first baseman or that Yonny Hernandez will be the backup third baseman, even with Lux out of the picture. Factor in Busch playing some left field, though, with Trayce Thompson and James Outman getting run in center field and Taylor getting more infield reps -- that is, if the Dodgers stand pat with their current cast of players.
That's how we'd construct the infield depth chart at this very moment after Lux's injury, but expect Spring Training battles and the materialization of the trade market to affect it in the coming weeks.
Hate to be that guy, but the Dodgers now look really foolish for letting both Corey Seager and Trea Turner walk in consecutive offseasons while relying on Lux, who has yet to even come close to reaching his ceiling while dealing with constant injury issues the last two years.
