Back in May, the Dodgers bullpen already looked like it was in shambles, with multiple relievers on the IL and LA seemingly unwilling to settle on any one combination of those that were healthy. Bullpen arms went up and down and back again, seemingly at random, as the Dodgers tried to figure out the formula, which was eventually just resolved by players coming back from the IL.
Nick Ramirez was one of those relievers cycled in and out after he came over from the Yankees in a cash trade just a few days into the season. Between April 13 and May 29, he was recalled and optioned four times. They called him up again on July 4 and sent him down the very next day, then designated him for assignment on July 30 to remove him from the 40-man roster. He cleared waivers and returned to Triple-A, where he stayed until Sunday.
The Dodgers sent Justin Wrobleski back to the minors again after just one relief outing following his spectacular 5 1/3 inning, 10-run blowout gag against the Diamondbacks. He only gave up one hit during his two innings out of the bullpen, but he also walked three batters and hit another, so the Dodgers decided they'd seen enough.
Through Ramirez's many trips up to the majors this season, he's pitched 11 1/3 innings for a 6.35 ERA, his last two outings on May 16 and July 4 having not been ideal (4 1/3 innings, seven earned runs). The Dodgers DFA'd reliever Michael Peterson to clear space for Ramirez on the 40-man.
Dodgers News: Nick Ramirez promoted (again), Cavan Biggio deal with Braves, Teoscar Hernández returns to the lineup
Cavan Biggio, who was DFA'd on Aug. 5 and released just a few days later, will be moving on to his fourth major league club this season alone. After the Dodgers let him go, he signed with the Giants on a minor-league deal and batted .163 over 12 games. On Saturday, the Giants sent him on the move again with a cash trade to the Braves. He isn't postseason eligible, having been added to the roster past the Sept. 1 deadline, unless a player sustains an injury and the Braves petition to have Biggio replace him.
In some great news for the Dodgers' postseason, Teoscar Hernández is expected to return to the lineup on Monday (or Tuesday, at the latest) after LA got a proper scare on Friday, when Hernández took a slider to the foot from Guardians starter Matthew Boyd. Dave Roberts, who has already jumped the gun on an injury once this year and made it sound a lot worse than it actually turned out to be (he said Brusdar Graterol sustained a Grade 3 hamstring strain when it was actually Grade 1), said after the game that Hernández was "not doing great" and would probably have to go onto the IL.
That has turned out not to be case; Hernández's MRI and CT scans came back negative, and he should be cleared to play again during LA's series against the Cubs. We can all breathe a collective sigh of relief, as Hernández's absence through the rest of the season and potentially into the postseason would've been one of the worst losses the lineup could sustain.
