The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired utility man Amed Rosario from the Tampa Bay Rays, per a report from The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. In a corresponding move, Los Angeles has designated left-handed pitcher Ryan Yarbrough for assignment in order to make room for Rosario.
Fansided MLB insider Robert Murray reported that the Dodgers would be sending right-handed pitcher Michael Flynn to the Rays in the deal. It remains unclear whether other pieces are involved in the return.
As a rental, the Dodgers weren't forced to dole out much in exchange for the infielder, though Flynn seems like a significant underpay, even in that context. The 27-year-old Flynn, on a one-year minor-league deal, currently sports a 4.95 ERA with Oklahoma City of the Pacific Coast League. The Rays have been phenomenal sellers thus far this summer, restocking their farm system with aplomb, but we don't think Rosenthal will be writing any more think pieces about this return.
Rays trade Amed Rosario to Dodgers: Instant Reaction
This marks the second season in a row that the Dodgers have acquired Rosario in a deadline deal. The 28-year-old finished last season with the Dodgers after coming over in a deadline trade with the Cleveland Guardians. In 48 games with Los Angeles in 2023, Rosario slashed .256/.301/.408 with three home runs.
Rosario is batting an impressive .307/.331/.417 with two homers in 76 games with the Rays this season while playing at second base, third base, shortstop and right field.
Hopefully, the Dodgers have a big fish planned for the deadline's final day, and not just a fill-in for last summer's Lance Lynn acquisition. Right now, after adding a utility player in Tommy Edman, a hard-throwing wild man in Michael Kopech, and Rosario, it's feeling a little familiar, considering Kiké Hernández and Joe Kelly were last summer's prizes and possess the same skills.
