While most of the rest of the league has to wait to start their spring training schedule, the Los Angeles Dodgers are kicking things off today, February 22nd, with their first spring training matchup with the San Diego Padres. The reason for the early spring training start is that these two teams are going to be opening the 2024 regular season earlier than the rest of the league with a series in Seoul, South Korea the third week of March.
The most important thing here is that baseball is back and our long nightmarish period without baseball is finally over. However, these first few spring training games are going to feature a lot more fringe roster candidates and prospects getting playing time and a lot less of the guys that are likely to be on the Opening Day roster. You always want to see the Dodgers playing well in spring training, but the results here are going to matter very little in the grand scheme of things.
With that said, here is how fans can follow along with the Dodgers' first spring training matchup of 2024.
How to watch the Dodgers vs. Padres spring training opener
While spring training coverage when it comes to TV can be VERY hit and miss, Dodgers fans are fortunate that this particular game has several options available to them. ESPN decided to carry this first spring training game which will allow the game to be watched nationwide and for the local Dodgers fans, the game will also be broadcast on SportsNet LA. The game starts at 3:10 PM EST/12:10 PM PST, so try to knock off work early if you can to catch the game.
For the cordcutters out there, there are streaming options available to you as ESPN+ will be streaming the game and Dodgers fans can also use fuboTV to watch the game as well.
How to listen to the Dodgers vs. Padres spring training opener on radio
For those that need to listen to the game on radio while on the road or just prefer the radio broadcast for whatever reason, the Dodgers' first spring training game will carried on 570 AM LA Sports. There will also be plenty of pre and post-game coverage there as well throughout 2024 spring training.
If you are wanting the Dodgers' Spanish-language spring training broadcast, KTNQ 1020 AM has you covered for the first three games of spring training along with the anticipated Freeway Series towards the end of March.
Dodgers vs. Padres Probable Pitchers for spring training opener
This is spring training we are talking about here so things are very much subject to change, but the probable pitchers for the Dodgers' first spring training game are Gavin Stone taking the mound for LA while the Padres are sending out Joe Musgrove. Stone will be battling for a rotation spot out of camp after a rough MLB debut in 2023 while Musgrove will be a staple in the Padres' 2024 rotation barring injury.
Neither pitcher is likely to pitch very long in this game with just a couple of innings of work being the most likely outcome. Expect both teams to give some bullpen arms and prospects plenty of looks in the early portion of the spring training schedule as starters work to get full stretched out.
