Max Muncy's rehab assignment gives MLB fans funny moment with top prospect
Max Muncy is finally headed back to the Dodgers after a rough three-month absence with an oblique strain. He seemed to be making little to no progress until he saw a chiropractor, leading to a "breakthrough" in his recovery, and he was headed to a rehab assignment not long after alongside Tommy Edman, who is working toward his season debut after undergoing wrist surgery last year.
They first joined OKC at home for two games against the Round Rock Express, then hit the road with the team for a series against the Las Vegas Aviators, the Athletics' Triple-A squad.
The Aviators are home to the A's No. 8 prospect Max Muncy, a shortstop and first-round pick for Oakland in 2021. To make things even weirder, the Dodgers' Muncy was also drafted by the A's back in 2012, and the two of them share a birthday: Aug. 25.
In a moment too good to pass up, the two Max Muncies met for the first time ahead of OKC and the Aviators' first game.
Dodgers' Max Muncy met Athletics' top prospect Max Muncy in Triple-A this week
A's Muncy, despite missing two months with an injury himself, has been a standout in Triple-A this year, batting .281 with a .874 OPS. In their first game, A's Muncy went 4-for-4 at the plate with two extra-base hits and three RBI, while Dodgers' Muncy singled in a 10-8 win against the Aviators.
Dodgers' Muncy also hit a single the next day in a 13-7 win for OKC, while A's Muncy went hitless with four strikeouts.
It's unclear how long Dodgers Muncy will remain in Triple-A before the Dodgers bring him back to the majors, but OKC and the Aviators have four more games lined up through Sunday, so we could be seeing a few more Max Muncy vs. Max Muncy contests.
Over four rehab games so far, Muncy's on a four-game hit streak and is batting .308 with a .785 OPS. He's looking good and clearly feeling positive about the sudden upward trajectory of his progress. The Dodgers have been looking a lot better in the few games since Mookie Betts' return, and despite the fact that they still have things to figure out with the rotation, getting Muncy and Edman back will be another massive boost for the lineup.
