Miguel Vargas looks totally dejected on TV after Dodgers traded him to White Sox
The Dodgers made it out of the trade deadline having acquired five notable major leaguers while only having to give up two in return. Miguel Vargas went to the White Sox as part of their three-way deal with the Cardinals for Tommy Edman and Michael Kopech, and Ryan Yarbrough went to the Blue Jays in return for Kevin Kiermaier.
It's pretty obvious who the real loser in all of this is, and it's not any of the teams. No, the real loser is Vargas, who had to spring into action (hitting leadoff, no less) for the worst team in baseball and maybe one of the worst teams the sport has ever seen. He went from the baseball equivalent of the penthouse straight to the basement.
On Monday, the White Sox suffered a 5-1 loss to the Athletics at the Coliseum. Vargas' one hit on the night, a double, was one of only four for Chicago amid the sludge.
After the loss, the A's broadcast caught Vargas in the visiting dugout, sitting alone and look absolutely miserable. This poor, poor man.
Miguel Vargas seems to be hating his life after being traded from Dodgers to White Sox
Vargas has been an everyday player in Chicago since the trade went down; he batted second through his first two games, but he moved up into leadoff starting in August. He's hitting .125 with a .484 OPS through his first six games with the White Sox, but his place at the top of the order truly reflects how dire the straits are for this Chicago team.
The only possible silver lining here is that Vargas will continue to be an everyday player with the Sox, when he probably never would've gotten off the bench with the Dodgers. It's not hard to look good on a team this bad, so if he can start hitting just a little bit better, he could turn into a godsend for them.
Unfortunately, Vargas is still years away from free agency and even arbitration eligibility, meaning that he'll be stuck with the White Sox until/if they decide to trade him. He got the rawest possible end of this deal, but we'll be pulling for a trade to literally any other team to commute this Baseball Prison sentence as soon as possible.
