Losers of four straight games, with two of those games coming against the San Francisco Giants, the Los Angeles Dodgers were reeling heading into Shohei Ohtani's start on Wednesday night. It certainly wasn't helping matters that Giants fans have been feeling themselves over the past week.

The Giants have been one of the biggest disappointments of the 2026 season, and recent speculation suggests that San Francisco may be inching closer to having the desire to dump some hefty contracts. Faced with that reality, it makes sense that Giants fans will hold the team's success against the Dodgers this season on a pedestal.

The Dodgers may have ended the Giants' luck on Wednesday night. Shohei Ohtani got the start and was excellent. He tossed seven scoreless innings while striking out eight. Along those lines, given that Ohtani homered on Tuesday night, there was speculation that Dave Roberts may go back on his word and use him as a DH, but the Dodgers manager stuck to the original plan. Ohtani was used only as a pitcher on Wednesday night.

What made Wednesday's victory perfect for the Dodgers was what happened with Giants shortstop Willy Adames in the seventh inning. The Giants had Ohtani on the ropes, with runners on first and second with one out. Adames was the leading runner at second base and seemingly forgot how many outs there were. Drew Gilbert hit a deep fly ball to Andy Pages in center field, and Adames immediately took off after Gilbert made contact. The result was Pages making an easy throw to Mookie Betts, who then relayed the ball to Miguel Rojas at second base to end the inning.

Not every team can handle the bright lights against the Dodgers

For all the trash-talking Giants fans had for the Dodgers this week, they were silenced real quick by Adames' error on the base paths. It's Dodgers fans who are likely getting the last laugh after reading Adames' reaction to the play after the game.

“I lost track of the outs and made a mistake on the read, too,” Adames said. “That obviously is a mistake that can’t happen in a game. That mistake is probably the most ashamed that I would feel playing the game. I know that can’t happen. It was my fault. That’s on me.”

Momentum shifts in the oddest of ways during the baseball season, and the Dodgers found that out once again on Wednesday night. As for the Giants, enjoy these games and the moment, because odds are they won't be available in October.
