Every other team in the NL West is getting asked about what it's like to share a division with the Dodgers. That's not surprising in the slightest — what the Dodgers were able to do in the offseason makes them the easy favorites to win the West — but it's probably a little exasperating for the guys on the Diamondbacks and Padres especially, who already know that they're going to have their work cut out for them.
And, of course, none of them are conceding that the Dodgers are the team to beat. Diamondbacks pitcher Kevin Ginkel said, "Every time we play those guys I feel like they can be beat," and the Padres, who gave the Dodgers a serious run for their money last year, are never going to say a nice word about the Dodgers.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today seems particularly set on asking everyone what they think about the Dodgers. He even sourced opinions from the Padres about Mookie Betts' move back to shortstop, which yielded an unfortunately valid opinion from Manny Machado.
Machado said, "I don't know why he'd want to do that. I don't know, man, it's crazy what he's trying to do. He's a Gold Glover. He's such a good outfielder. Why go play such a demanding position? It takes so much of a toll on your body."
Manny Machado is just as confused as Dodgers fans about Mookie Betts' position switch to shortstop (again)
This is exactly what Dodgers fans have been saying since last year, when the Dodgers kept Betts at shortstop well into June after Gavin Lux couldn't cut it there in spring training. Betts put up more errors there in just 3 1/2 months than he ever had in a full season, and ranked dead last among qualified shortstops in multiple categories before the Dodgers moved him back to right field (eventually) after a long absence with a broken hand.
Dodgers' fans hatred for Machado might be enough for some to quickly change lanes and start standing by Betts, but we have to admit that he has a point. Betts is such a good outfielder. The Dodgers have ample options for shortstop who are historically better at that position (Miguel Rojas, Kiké Hernández, Tommy Edman). His dedication to sticking there just doesn't make sense.
No one's saying that Betts isn't putting in the work to get better. Nightengale also reported that he showed up to camp early to take reps at shortstop, with Max Muncy at third and Miguel Rojas assisting. The team is still standing by him. But with his track record, we'll believe in it when we see something to believe in.
