Don’t look now, but the Los Angeles Dodgers have tightened the gap in the NL West to just 1.5 games. That’ll happen you win rattle off eight straight wins, but the Giants finally deciding to lose some games has been convenient.

It only took until the latter stages of August!

It also helps that the Dodgers are playing the free-falling Mets, who can’t seem to find a way to defeat the defending champs.

New York loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth inning after they had already made it a one-run game, but JD Davis struck out looking and Kenley Jansen shut the door in the ninth by retiring the side in order.

Max Scherzer will take the ball for the Dodgers in this one and he’ll be making his second start against the Mets in a span of six days. Last Sunday, Scherzer limited New York to two runs on four hits, to go with seven strikeouts to pick up his 14th win of the year.

Opposing Scherzer will be former Dodgers lefty Rich Hill, who was given a warm ovation by the Dodger Stadium crowd in Thursday’s series-opener.

Acquired by the Mets before the trade deadline, Hill has had a rough go of it in Queens, logging a 4.98 ERA and 9.6 hits per nine innings in four starts.

Let’s think about this. Scherzer has historically dominated the Mets — he’s 13-5 with a 2.71 ERA and 205 strikeouts in 25 career starts vs New York — and the Dodgers will face a pitcher in Hill who’s starting to look his age.

Though Hill is familiar with some members of the Dodgers’ lineup, something tell us LA is going to tee off on the 41-year-old.
