Another hilarious World Series wrinkle has Dodgers fans laughing at Blue Jays

Prince Harry had an entire nation incensed with him.

Storylines from the 2025 World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays continue to amuse, including one involving Prince Harry and Meghan, also known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Harry and Meghan attended Game 4 of the World Series at Dodger Stadium. The royal couple were guests of the Dodgers' owner. They were given front row seats behind the plate for the game, as well as a pair of Dodgers hats to wear for the occasion. This all sounds harmless, right? Well, it turns out plenty of Canadians were enraged by the Duke and Duchess wearing Dodgers hats. Seriously.

Harry and Meghan's hats were viewed by many Canadians as a major sign of disrespect, since Canada is a British Commonwealth that acknowledges King Charles III (Harry's father) as the head of state.

Prince Harry publicly apologizes for wearing Dodgers hat during World Series Game 4

The social media criticism of Harry and Meghan got so serious that Harry felt the need to issue multiple public apologies to Canadians about the Dodgers hats. Harry tried his best to make light of the situation. "When you're missing a lot of hair on top and you're sitting under floodlights, you'll take any hat that's available," Harry said in one interview.

Some observers of the controversy dug up a deeper meaning. The Dodgers hats were a symbol of Harry and Meghan's split from the royal family and entrance in American culture, certain analysts speculated (the couple relinquished themselves of most royal duties in 2020 and eventually settled down in Montecito, California, after a brief period of living in Canada).

NBC News’ Hallie Jackson also reported on what's becoming known as "Hatgate". “Did an L.A. Dodgers hat really cause an international incident?” Jackson said with a disbelieving tone. “Yes, sort of, mostly because of whose head it was on. … It was a huge slap in the face to Canadians.”

Despite wearing a Dodgers hat, Prince Harry claims Blue Jays allegiance

Harry admitted (or claimed) in subsequent interviews that he was actually rooting for the Blue Jays throughout the World Series, saying with a sheepish grin on his face that such an admission might make his time in Los Angeles a bit more difficult moving forward.

It's hilarious that Harry's apology tour wasn't ironic in the slightest. He was sincere — or at least had to feign sincerity — in the face of genuine, serious criticism from the Canadian public.

This entire saga has given Dodgers fans another reason to laugh mockingly at the Blue Jays' fans and media. Kiké Hernández recently roasted a Toronto reporter for claiming that the better team had lost the World Series. Hernández also trolled Drake during the championship parade (Drake mocked Shohei Ohtani on Instagram after Game 5). Dodgers fans were loving every moment of Kiké's clap-backs, and they're sure to get a kick out of the Harry and Meghan controversy, too.

All in all, what was truly an insane World Series has produced a wealth of sub-plots and media narratives that have become gifts that keep on giving. It'll be tough for the 2026 World Series to live up to the drama that's unfolded over the past few weeks.
