Shohei Ohtani took off to steal second base with two outs in the seventh inning in Game 2 of the World Series. As he dropped into a slide, silence washed over the crowd at Dodger Stadium.

The Los Angeles Dodgers' superstar dropped his left hand to the ground as he fell into the slide. The force from his fall jammed his shoulder. As he was called out on the play, he motioned to the umpire to ask for a timeout. He grabbed his left arm and winced in pain as trainers jogged out to meet him.

Ohtani was slow to get up and a trainer supported his arm on their walk to the clubhouse. He did not return to play after he was examined by training staff.

After the Dodgers secured their 4-2 win and a two-game advantage over the Yankees, manager Dave Roberts updated reporters on the status of Ohtani's injury.

The 30-year-old suffered a shoulder subluxation and is set to undergo further testing before Game 3, but his strength and range of motion in his left arm are good enough that the Dodgers expect Ohtani to be able to play in the rest of the series.

Shohei Ohtani Injury Update: Dodgers optimistic about status

"We're encouraged," Roberts said, per Alden González of ESPN.

Ohtani has been a critical part of the 2024 Dodgers squad after he posted the first-ever 50-steal, 50-homer season in MLB history. He collected 59 steals in the regular season but is now 0-for-2 on steal attempts in the playoffs.

Ohtani is slashing .260/.403/.460 with a .863 OPS, a double, three homers, 13 runs and 10 RBI over 13 playoff games. He hasn't performed up to his regular season level in the postseason, but as one of the most feared hitters in the league, he's critical to LA's offense. And that's still good output against the best teams in MLB during his first ever playoff appearance.

Despite Roberts' positive update, Ohtani is still slated for scans on Oct. 27. A more definitive update on the DH's condition is on the way after his imaging is complete, so stay tuned for updates.
