The Los Angeles Dodgers will have three picks on the first day of the 2025 MLB Draft this Sunday in Atlanta, and they may use one of them to select their future heir to Mookie Betts.
Multiple mock drafts, including Carlos Collazo's for Baseball America (subscription required) and Kiley McDaniel's for ESPN, projected that the Dodgers will use their first pick in the draft (No. 40 overall) to select Quentin Young, a third baseman and outfielder from Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, roughly 39 miles away from Dodger Stadium.
Young, ranked as the No. 37 prospect in this year's draft class according to MLB Pipeline, is the nephew of former Major Leaguers Dmitri and Delmon Young. The brothers were both selected in the first round of their respective MLB Drafts (Dmitri at No. 4 overall to the Baltimore Orioles in 1996 and Delmon at No. 1 overall to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2003), and their nephew appears poised to follow in their footsteps.
Dodgers could take Quentin Young, nephew of Dmitri and Delmon Young, in upcoming 2025 Draft
Beyond his MLB pedigree, the first thing that stands about Young is his extraordinary physical build. At 6-foot-6 and 215 pounds, he has a cannon for an arm and still boasts above-average athleticism for his size, which is particularly evident at his primary defensive position of shortstop. MLB Pipeline projects Young to move to third base if he stays in the infield, while also noting that right field could be a fit for his plus arm.
At the plate, Young is known for his tremendous raw power coming from his large physical frame. He has some swing-and-miss concerns, though, so the Dodgers' ability to develop hitters will be tested if they do select him at No. 40.
Young is committed to play baseball at LSU if he doesn't sign professionally, but his physicality and ceiling excite evaluators around the league. According to MLB Pipeline, Young "could provide a team with a Jayson Werth-type of toolbox" if he can tap into a more consistent hit tool, and scouts believe he will have no issue doing just that.
