The Diamondbacks are having a weird offseason. Even though they haven't been able to get back to the playoffs since their wild World Series run in 2023 and finished 2025 with a losing record, they have the core pieces to get back to competing. Even if they don't look like they stand a chance against the Dodgers, the Padres are floundering, the Giants are still in limbo, and the Rockies are helpless, as always.
But they've made just two real additions this offseason, getting Merrill Kelly back after trading him to the Rangers at the deadline and signing Michael Soroka to a one-year deal. They also re-signed James McCann to a one-year deal.
While they've entered the fray for Alex Bregman, their entire offseason really seems to hinge on whether or not they trade Ketel Marte.
Insiders have been convinced that a Marte trade is imminent at various points throughout the offseason, and they've been wrong every time. Arizona GM Mike Hazen told MLB.com on Tuesday that the Diamondbacks are "very likely to put an end to this shortly."
On the same day, Marte reposted a picture of himself and Corbin Carroll celebrating a run with the caption "Not [a] good teammate," with a couple of smiling emojis.
Diamondbacks' offseason is being derailed by Ketel Marte drama, trade rumors
The trouble started during the All-Star break, when Marte's home in Scottsdale was burglarized. He requested some time away from the team to take care of it, but he spent most of that time in the Dominican Republic, which reportedly ruffled some of his teammates' feathers. The drama might've been sort of overblown, given that he only missed three games and the Diamondbacks were in fourth place in the NL West before the break, but it gave way to trade rumors.
Hazen added that he never viewed a trade as likely and didn't see it going that way, but also said that he couldn't define what "shortly" meant ("I haven't figured that out yet"). That sounds a lot more like a door being left cracked for any interested teams to get their best, last-ditch trade offers in, and less like an outright dismissal.
Arizona isn't viewed as the favorite to land Bregman (most insiders' money is still on the Red Sox), and they're running out of time to actually make an impact addition. This Marte drama has clearly spiraled out in a way they didn't anticipate, but it's not getting them any closer to competing with the Dodgers (or the Padres or even the Giants, for that matter) in 2026.
