As if getting swept by the Milwaukee Brewers wasn't bad enough, the Los Angeles Dodgers' start to the second half was also marred by yet another injury to one of their star players.
Fans held their breath when All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman – who has already dealt with his share of injuries this season – took an 88 mph sinker off his left wrist during Sunday's series finale that prompted him to exit the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. They breathed a sigh of relief, however, when the X-rays on Freeman's wrist came back negative.
Freeman is currently listed as day-to-day with a left wrist contusion, and the Dodgers will hope he can avoid a stint on the injured list. He already missed a handful of games at the start of the season due to a nagging rib injury that had plagued him during the 2024 postseason. Not to mention, he served a minimum-length 10-day IL stint in April after aggravating his surgically-repaired right ankle by slipping in the shower.
Miguel Rojas took over at first base when Freeman exited Sunday's game, but Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters (including Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic) that Dalton Rushing will get the start at first if Freeman is unable to go Monday against the Minnesota Twins. Rushing has logged a total of 10 innings at first base over four games at the Major League level, and this would mark his first career start at the position.
Dodgers Injury Update: Blake Snell rehab, Max Muncy timeline
In more positive injury news, Dodgers starting pitcher Blake Snell could be nearing his return from the injured list after a strong rehab outing on Sunday with Triple-A Oklahoma City. The southpaw threw 58 pitches (38 strikes) over four innings, allowing one run on four hits while issuing a walk and striking out six in his third rehab start to date.
Snell, who signed a free agent deal with the Dodgers during the offseason, has been on the injured list since April 3 with left shoulder inflammation. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on May 17 and is now eligible to return to the Dodgers once fully healthy.
Roberts told reporters (including Sonja Chen of MLB.com) that Snell would make at least one more rehab start before returning to the Dodgers. The goal is to have Snell pitch into the fifth inning before activating him off the IL.

Another injured Dodger making progress in his recovery is third baseman Max Muncy, who went down with a bone bruise in his left knee at the beginning of July.
Muncy has resumed swinging, playing catch and taking grounders at third base, according to Roberts, and he could potentially begin a rehab assignment later this week. Barring any setbacks, he is still on track to return to the Dodgers sometime in August.
