Dodgers' Max Muncy matched A's counterpart in flat-out spooky fashion this weekend

Last August, Max Muncy was rehabbing with an oblique strain after going onto the IL in May, and Dodgers fans were treated to a novelty: the Dodgers' Muncy met Athletics top prospect Max Muncy in a meeting between the Oklahoma City Comets and the Las Vegas Aviators. Dodgers Muncy was drafted in 2012, A's Muncy was drafted in 2021, and the two of them share a birthday: August 25.

Dodgers Muncy was also once a top A's prospect, peaking at No. 15 in 2014, while A's Muncy is currently No. 8 in their pipeline. The former Muncy has become a mainstay of the Dodgers' lineup since the Dodgers promoted him in 2018, and latter Muncy earned himself a spot on the Athletics' Opening Day roster this year.

Neither have gotten off to particularly auspicious starts this season, and Dodgers Muncy looks like he may be writing his own ticket off of the roster when the team is faced with their club option on him for 2026, provided he can't pick it up through the rest of the season.

MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince noted another moment when the stars aligned for the two Muncys after Dodgers Muncy's third at-bat against the Cubs on Sunday ended in a sac fly: both were batting .180 with a .496 OPS.

Dodgers' veteran Max Muncy and Athletics' rookie Max Muncy were in uncanny alignment on Sunday night

Dodgers Muncy spoiled it when he struck out in his next and last at-bat of the game, but for a couple of innings, they were basically the same exact person.

Athletics Muncy picked up his first major league home run in his second game, but he's been almost as unproductive at the plate as his Dodgers counterpart. But Dodgers Muncy is still waiting for his first homer of the season, and he's still trailing A's Muncy by one RBI on the season.

If history tells us anything, then maybe we should expect to see A's Muncy DFA'ed after a few years up and down between the majors to minors. We could even expect the Dodgers to pick him up and turn him into a superstar, which is exactly what they did for their current Muncy.

At this point, with these two guys and their same name and same birthday and same batting line (even it was just for a few minutes), it wouldn't be the weirdest thing in the world.
