There were understandably some very high expectations placed on the Los Angeles Dodgers heading into the 2025 season. In addition to being the defending World Series champions, the Dodgers added multiple high-end talents to their roster and returned most of the guys that helped get them to the World Series and capture it last year.
As to how good the Dodgers COULD be this year? That remains to be seen. Injuries to key players have caused some problems, and there are other central players on the roster who have struggled. We haven't seen the Dodgers at their best and healthiest yet, and when that happens, we will have a better sense of their ceiling.
But that didn't stop ESPN from taking a stab at guessing where the 2025 Dodgers could rank all-time in terms of the most talented teams in baseball history. As of now, the 2025 team already ranks third on their all-time rankings, which feels crazy to say this early on, but makes a lot more sense once you dig into a bit.
Dodgers fans hope ESPN is right in ranking 2025 roster among most talented rosters ever
While this ranking may feel premature and will certainly trigger the more superstitious fans, it isn't as crazy as it sounds. If you were to make a list of the top 10 hitters in baseball right now, it is a near certainty that Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman would be on most lists, with Teoscar Hernández and apparently Tommy Edman also being dangerous.
Pitching injuries have certainly been a problem, with Blake Snell the latest concern to pop up, but Yoshinobu Yamamoto has been great and Roki Sasaki has shown flashes of what he is capable of. In terms of raw talent, LA can hang with pretty much any team in baseball history.
Talent doesn't win games on its own, though, and there is a chance that this 2025 squad struggles to realize their potential, especially if they can't get healthy and if Ohtani's pitching debut keeps getting pushed further down the road. Still, it is clear that this roster is loaded with promise and has a chance to be truly special if things start breaking their way.
