There is certainly no love lost between Los Angeles Dodges fans and Chicago Cubs All-Star Pete Crow-Armstrong. He made it very clear at the start of the season how he felt about Dodgers fans, and well, it's hard to come back from that.
Dodgers fans likely haven't been paying attention to what Crow-Armstrong has been doing with the Cubs, but he's found himself in the National League MVP conversation. The 24-year-old boasted a .917 OPS at the All-Star break with 21 home runs. Add in his speed and status as one of the best fielders in all of baseball, his fWAR is soaring.
Specific to just position players, Crow-Armstrong has the highest fWAR in all of baseball (6.0). The next closest player is Bobby Witt Jr. with a mark of 4.8. Shohei Ohtani is still the leader of the pack, considering he boasts a collective 6.3 fWAR; which factors in both his value as a hitter and starting pitcher.
Pete Crow Armstrong handled Shohei Ohtani MVP question better than anyone expected
That's the primary reason why, assuming he's healthy, Ohtani is well on his away to another MVP award. As much as Dodgers fans may hate Crow-Armstrong, they likely found some appreciation in what he had to say about chasing down Ohtani.
"I was telling a few of the guys earlier, 'Man, I would love to dethrone him,' but I don't know how you do it unless I go to a pitching lab in the off-season. I'll go be a closer or something and see how that helps my odds."
For a Cubs team that has dealt with several injuries to their pitching staff this season, the idea of Crow-Armstrong becoming a pitcher may not be that far off.
All jokes aside, this is a different side to Crow-Armstrong that Dodgers fans haven't seen before. He has an appreciate for the game, and his peers, and he certainly wasn't going to step on Ohtani's toes. That' won't end the beef between the Cubs' outfielder and the LA fanbase, but hey, at least all of his opinions aren't worthy of being thrown out.
If nothing else, the conversation of Crow-Armstrong in the MVP race is just another reminder of what a true unicorn Ohtani is for the Dodgers. As long as he's one of the best starting pitchers and hitters in the National League, the conversation ends there.
