The New York Mets were five outs away from a convincing series win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. They were about to drop three out of four at home after losing two out of three in May during their visit to Citi Field.
But then the Mets did what the Mets do best. They Mets'ed it. And it paved the way for a late Dodgers' victory to salvage the series split. To make it even better, former Met Michael Conforto delivered the final blow.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Dodgers had a runner on third with Andy Pages at the plate. On an 0-2 count, Pages stabbed at a nasty sinker in the dirt in an attempt to stay alive, but sent a dribbler down the third base line.
For whatever reason, Will Smith was running on contact with one out, and third baseman Brett Baty had him dead to rights after fielding the grounder cleanly. But Baty double-clutched and then made one of the worst throws you'll ever see. He bounced the ball off the dirt as Francisco Alvarez was expecting an easy toss to apply the tag on Smith. The ball got away and Smith scored to tie the game, 5-5.

Dodgers' Michael Conforto delivers game-winning hit against Mets in hilarious moment
How does that even happen? It was only Baty's second error on the season at third base, and it kept the Dodgers' rally alive.
A few batters later, Conforto, mired in an 0-for-30 streak with runners in scoring position, came to the plate after pinch hitter Freddie Freeman was intentionally walked with two outs. Conforto was hitting just .165 with a .583 OPS and 69 OPS+ in 55 games this year. He's logged -0.8 WAR. Should've been absolute cake to sit him down.

But Conforto jumped in the first pitch he saw. He got one over the plate and ripped it into left field to score the game-winning run. There couldn't have been a more favorable batter to face in this situation, and the Mets let it cost them the game.
In a contest where Landon Knack lasted just 3 1/3 innings and David Peterson lasted seven for the Mets, LA pulled out an unlikely win. Though they didn't win the season series vs New York, they definitely just snagged back the momentum and gained a mental edge with Conforto playing the hero.
