A few homegrown Dodgers have made good arguments for the effectiveness of the Dodgers' farm system this year: Will Smith signed a 10-year extension, Gavin Stone is looking like LA's best active starter, and Andy Pages earned himself a spot in the majors without having to deal with the weird up-and-down many of his fellow top prospects have experienced this season.

Still, there are signs that the Dodgers system is on a downward trend. MLB Pipeline's updated top 100 features only three Dodgers, and all rank below 50. Two of the team's prospects are headed to the All-Star Futures Game, but neither are bigger names that fans have started to become more familiar with (Dalton Rushing, Diego Cartaya, Josue De Paula).

So that's where the draft comes in. This year's draft will take place on Sunday, July 14, giving the Dodgers a chance to introduce some fresh talent into the organization.

All-Star Weekend is packed with activities, and they start with prospects. The Futures Game will take place on Saturday (along with the All-Star Celebrity Softball Game, but who cares about that), with the first two rounds of the draft following on Sunday night ahead of the marquee major league proceedings (Home Run Derby on Monday, All-Star Game on Tuesday).

Rounds 3-20 of the draft will take place ahead of the Derby and All-Star Game, but the main event will be the first two rounds.

The MLB Draft broadcast has made leaps and bounds since it first started airing in 2009, and it's pretty apparent that the league wants to turn it into a capital-E event. They've been able to get a few more players into the building since 2009 (when the only player who attended was Mike Trout), including lefty pitcher Cam Caminiti, switch pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje, shortstops Kaelen Culpepper and JJ Wetherholt, outfielder Braden Montgomery, and second baseman Christian Moore, but it's likely that most if not all of the above will be snatched up before the Dodgers make their first choice.

Dodgers 2024 MLB Draft Position and Bonus Pool: Where Do the Dodgers Pick?

Perhaps the only possible upside to the Dodgers getting shut out in the postseason last year is that, with the 23rd pick, they'll choose ahead of a few key competitors: the Braves, Padres, Yankees, and Phillies. The Dodgers lost their second- and fifth-round picks after signing Shohei Ohtani, who rejected a qualifying offer from the Angels last season. They also lost $1 million in international bonus pool money with the signing.

A few names have already been thrown out as potential first-round Dodgers picks: MLB Pipeline has LA taking high school SS/2B Theo Gillen or high school RHP William Schmidt, while The Athletic projects high school RHP Ryan Sloan. With the Dodgers selecting so far down the order, they won't have a shot at probable first overall pick Travis Bazzana, nor two-way player Jac Caglianone, who's drawn Ohtani comparisons. A multitude of different names have been thrown out as Dodgers picks, so it's hard to tell who they'll actually opt into on the day.

2024 MLB Draft: Complete First Round Draft Order

  1. Cleveland Guardians
  2. Cincinnati Reds
  3. Colorado Rockies
  4. Oakland Athletics
  5. Chicago White Sox

  9. Pittsburgh Pirates
  10. Washington Nationals

  29. Arizona Diamondbacks
  30. Texas Rangers

All of the mock drafts and projections in the world can't totally predict exactly how teams will actually pick, so the Dodgers probably have backup plan upon backup plan as all 30 teams try to out-war-game each other on Sunday.

The Dodgers also have $6,114,700 million in bonus pool money, the second lowest in the league ahead of only the Astros, to spend on their first pick. LA has literally always overspent since the rule was implemented and have been subjected to some complicated tax penalties accordingly, but clearly that's never stopped them.

Even though the Dodgers are picking 23rd, tune in at 7 PM EST for the whole event. Although it's easy to forget sometimes, almost all of the Dodgers' current stars started right here, and their 2024 picks have a very good shot at shaping this team in the near future.
