MLB just delivered nightmare fuel for Dodgers and Kendrick Lamar fans
The Dodgers made their stance on the Drake-Kendrick Lamar beef that took the world by storm in April/May clear when Gavin Lux decided to use "Not Like Us" β Lamar's final, brutal blow in a feud that saw 10 songs exchanged back and forth β as his walk-up song, profanities and all. The organist at Dodger Stadium solidified it when he played it a few days later, this time sans-profanity.
It makes sense; Lamar is a Compton native and Angeleno (not to mention that his artistry laps Drake's so much that it's silly, and we won't be hearing arguments about this). When Drake picked a fight with him, he basically turned a blind eye to the decades of rap history in Los Angeles and declared war on the entire city.
This is part of what makes Drake's newest PR move in partnership with New Era and MLB deeply hilarious. His OVO brand dropped four baseball caps, two for the Dodgers, one for the Phillies, and one for the Yankees. The other funny part? Drake's from Toronto. Why don't the Blue Jays get a cap?
Drake releases new Dodgers caps despite the fact that all of Los Angeles hates him
All you have to do to gauge how well these caps will sell in LA is look at the replies to MLB's tweet. While positive reactions to anything are exceedingly rare on Twitter, you'll have to scroll down pretty far to see anyone say anything nice about the hats, or Drake himself. Almost everyone's got something to complain about: the Dodgers fans just don't like him, the Yankees fans are mad about the Astros colors on a Yankees cap, and some people just aren't a fan of the owl logo.
The ridiculousness of this merchandising stunt is maybe even more absurd than the Padres trying to co-opt the "not like us" mantra when Lamar is literally from Los Angeles. He even threw out the first pitch at a Dodgers game in 2015.
Safe to say that these hats won't be flying off shelves, especially in LA, and especially not with the $70 price tag. You'll have to try some to curry favor with Angelenos some other way, Drake.
