The biggest question that contenders faced at the MLB trade deadline last summer was what version of Sandy Alcantara they would be trading for. The Miami Marlins were shopping Alcantara at the deadline, but he was in the midst of looking like one of the worst starting pitchers in the National League — a far cry from the Cy Young award winner that Marlins fans saw in 2022. The Marlins ultimately held onto the 30-year-old, not wanting to sell short on his trade value.

Given that it's the Dodgers, and Alcantara is a starting pitcher who certainly could be back on the trade block this July, LA fans likely caught wind of his first start of the season. He tossed a "Maddux" for the Marlins last week against the Chicago White Sox, pitching a complete game in under 100 pitches.

There are going to be understandable reservations, considering the opponent, but a complete game in less than 100 pitches is impressive, regardless of the team it's against. The Marlins opened the season winning five of their first six games, and Alcantara's outing on Wednesday cemented their early-season success.

Yet, in the immediate aftermath, the former Cy Young Award winner couldn't help but take a swipe at ... Marlins fans.

Sandy Alcantara wouldn't have an attendance swipe if he we're pitching for the Dodgers

It's an early April game between a team that has been historically bad over the last two years and a team in the Marlins that has struggled to draw crowds of consequence. If you were betting the attendance line, taking the under was the obvious move.

Trading for Alcantara at the deadline could prove difficult for the Dodgers. They certainly have the prospect capital to do so, but there's a decent chance that Miami is still in contention during the later months of the regular season. Not to mention, the Marlins traded Edward Cabrera and Ryan Weathers during the offseason, so the incentive to trade Alcantara may not be as strong as it once was.

If not through trade, Alcantara could be there for the Dodgers' taking as soon as this offseason. The Marlins hold a $21 milion club option on his contract for the 2027 season, and depending on how their payroll shakes out, it's possible they let him test free agency.

It's not the most straightforward path for the Dodgers, but the oft-rumored veteran certainly opened the door to the possibility with his swipe at the Miami faithful.
